Understanding Venous Disease

Symptoms of vein disease vary greatly, but should always be taken seriously. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms in your legs, you may want to consider being evaluated by Dr. Olsen:

  • Swelling
  • Aching Pain – Often Worse at Night
  • Pruritus (Itching of the Legs)
  • Fatigue and/or Heaviness
  • Night Cramps, Restless Legs,
  • Numbness or Tingling
  • Burning or Throbbing Veins
  • Bulging or Enlarged Veins Raised Above the Skin Surface (Varicose Veins)
  • Small Red or Blue Often Web-Like Veins Found Close to the Skin Surface (Spider Veins)

Venous Insufficiency may be present even in the absence of varicose or spider veins, and can still be helped by many of our procedures.

Varicose Veins vs. Spider Veins

Varicose and Spider Veins are often confused by patients. Although both can be unsightly, varicose veins are typically associated with venous disease – however spider veins are usually a cosmetic issue.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen, bulging, abnormally enlarged veins that protrude from the surface of the skin. They typically have a twisted, rope or cord-like appearance and are blue or dark purple in color.

Venefit Closure

Venefit Closure is a minimally invasive procedure in which Radiofrequency (RF) energy is directed into the vein walls, which causes the affected vein to seal itself shut. The faulty vein is eventually reabsorbed by the body, while blood flow is redirected to healthy veins. Features of this treatment include little or no discomfort to the patient and minimal bruising. Patients can usually return quickly to a normal activity levels.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins and occur near the surface of the skin, but are small and threadlike. They often look like spider webs or tree branches, and can be red, blue, or purplish in color.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the most common therapy for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a medicated sclerosing solution into the affected blood vessels, causing the veins to close and be reabsorbed into the body. The procedure takes about ten minutes to perform. Multiple sessions may be required for desired results.
